In preparation for our registration to become a charity, we asked our members to share their stories about why they engage with the group.
The post below summarises the experiences of ten individuals who joined Activate Mental Health, outlining their reasons for joining, the benefits they’ve received, and how their lives may differ without the organisation.
Reasons for Joining
Many respondents joined Activate Mental Health to tackle social isolation, loneliness, and feelings of depression or anxiety. Several individuals specifically mentioned wanting a safe and gentle way to re-engage socially after extended periods of isolation. Some also joined to meet new people, forge friendships, or find a sense of community and belonging. One respondent joined to assist their autistic daughter in socialising, while another sought support following the loss of loved ones.
Benefits of Engagement
The engagement with Activate Mental Health has led to numerous positive impacts on mental health, social connection, and overall well-being. Common benefits include:
Increased social connection: Respondents reported making new friends, forming genuine and lasting friendships, and connecting with a diverse array of people.
Improved mental health: Many experienced an enhancement in general mental well-being, reduced feelings of depression, anxiety, and anger, and greater confidence.
Reduced isolation: The group provided opportunities to leave the house, explore the community, and participate in activities, thereby counteracting feelings of isolation.
Sense of belonging and support: Individuals felt accepted, understood, and able to be themselves within the group, finding a supportive community.
Personal growth: Some gained a deeper understanding of themselves and others, developed resilience, and found encouragement to become more engaged in life.
Specific benefits: One respondent noted respite from stress and the development of friendships for their daughter, while another found the group helpful in managing an eating disorder.
Impact if Activate Mental Health Didn't Exist
Respondents generally believe that without Activate Mental Health, their mental health and well-being would be significantly worse. Many expect to continue feeling isolated, depressed, anxious, or angry. Several mentioned that they would struggle to find social connections, hide away, or need professional help. The consensus is that the absence of Activate Mental Health would result in a lack of crucial support, a missed opportunity for community building, and a poorer quality of life for individuals facing social and mental health challenges.
