Activate Mental Health is a friendly, warm, and inviting community. Read the 10 reasons below why you should consider joining our group.

✅ Inclusive, welcoming events like board game nights and coffee catch-ups

Activate Mental Health offers a lively mix of activities designed to engage people from all walks of life. One of the most noticeable aspects of any event is the incredible diversity of attendees. People of all ages, genders, abilities, and backgrounds come together, creating a genuinely inclusive and welcoming community. It’s rare to find such a beautifully eclectic group unified by a shared commitment to mental wellbeing, and that’s what makes Activate so special.

“For the past three years, I have attended the Activate Mental Health TED Talk Discussion Groups, and they have been an unexpected and wonderful experience. Unlike many community events, this group has a remarkable mix of people—men and women from diverse backgrounds and ages. It’s rare to find such gender balance in community spaces, and that variety brings fresh perspectives, making discussions lively and engaging.”

💬 Empathy without stigma: a community that understands mental health challenges

While Activate Mental Health focuses on mental wellbeing, you might be surprised to learn that mental health isn’t always the main topic of conversation at our events. The atmosphere is so social and engaging that people naturally connect over shared interests, laughter, and good conversation. We see this as a healthy balance: a chance to take a break, recharge, and enjoy being around others. That said, if you ever feel the need to talk about what’s on your mind, you’ll always find a safe, supportive space where you’re heard and welcomed.

“The environment created by AMH events is warm, welcoming, and laid-back. These qualities help everyone feel included and encourage socialising, which can lead to making new friends.”

“Activate Mental Health has helped me to get out of the house and re-engage with the community. It helped me to make friends and build confidence. It's so good to feel understood and to feel a sense of belonging. Thank you.”

🙌 Volunteer-powered impact through Activators and peer-led initiatives

Activate Mental Health is entirely powered by volunteers, a passionate team of individuals committed to tackling one of the world’s biggest health challenges: loneliness. Their dedication fuels every event, every connection, and every moment of support within our community.

One of our TED Talk Discussion Group volunteers shared:

"Personally, I’ve benefitted a lot from the content in the TED Talks and what the group takes away month after month. I’ve also made new friends and found a great environment to socialise."

It’s stories like these that remind us why we do what we do and how powerful community-led support can be.

🌍 A growing movement with real community impact across Perth

As we celebrate our 10th year, we’re proud to see the Activate Mental Health community continue growing, with about 850 new members joining each year! What’s even more impressive is that this growth has been entirely organic, with no advertising spend. It’s a strong reflection of the real need for safe, social, and supportive spaces focused on mental wellbeing. We’re very grateful to everyone who has helped build this thriving community.

🧠 Designed by people with lived experience — trauma-informed and strengths-based

At Activate Mental Health, every event and interaction is thoughtfully designed by individuals who understand the complexities of mental health because they've lived it themselves. This trauma-informed and strengths-based approach creates a safe, welcoming space where participants feel seen, heard, and valued.

One member beautifully captured this sentiment:

“I really enjoyed seeing familiar faces in a non-threatening environment, knowing others may be struggling too and that we were all in this together doing something positive for each other.”

This shared understanding fosters a sense of solidarity and mutual respect, allowing people to show up as they are, without judgment or pressure. By focusing on strengths and creating opportunities for meaningful connection, Activate Mental Health empowers individuals to take steps toward healing, growth, and community.

🛠️ Opportunities to co-create new event formats and resources

Over the years, our amazing volunteers have introduced a wide range of event formats, including:

  • ☕ Simple coffee catch-ups

  • 📚 Study sessions

  • 🧗 Bouldering

  • 🎥 TED Circles and TED Talk discussion groups

  • ✍️ Writing group

  • …and many more!

Their creativity and passion have helped shape the unique and welcoming vibe of Activate Mental Health.

🆓 Free to attend, with no pressure to share or perform

At Activate Mental Health, we believe in keeping things accessible; that’s why there are no membership fees or costs to join our events. Many of our activities are entirely free, and for those that involve third-party venues (like ten-pin bowling or 8-ball pool), any costs are paid directly to those providers. Our goal is to make it easy for everyone to connect, participate, and feel welcome.

🚀 Skill-building and confidence through real-world experience

One of the most rewarding aspects of being involved in our cause, whether as a member or a volunteer, is the personal growth that naturally comes with participation. The more you engage with the group, the more you’ll find your confidence, communication, and social skills developing.

As our group leader, Rahul Seth, reflects:

"One of the things I’ve noticed as part of my personal development with this group is that, through leading this cause and running hundreds of events, my interpersonal skills have grown significantly. I feel much more confident meeting new people and striking up conversations. I truly believe that the more you engage with this group, whether through volunteering or simply attending events, the more you’ll experience similar benefits."

😄 Connection through joy, proving that recovery can be uplifting

Recovery can be uplifting, especially when connection is built through joy. Participants in our community events often share how these experiences bring laughter, confidence, and a sense of belonging:

“Fantastic evening! It’s been a while since I went out and needed the laughs and enjoyment from that experience."

“I quickly gained confidence and self-esteem spending time with safe and supportive people who had the same struggles as I did.”

“I would not miss any of my regular activities unless I had to. They add joy to my life!”

These moments remind us that healing doesn’t have to be solemn; it can be shared, spirited, and full of light.
