Debbie, a dedicated member of Activate Mental Health, has attended over 90 of our group's events since joining in 2022. Her involvement highlights the comfort, connection, and unexpected joy she has found through our inclusive events. From exploring places like Tomato Lake to building lasting friendships, Debbie's story showcases the value of a community where everyone feels they
belong. Read more about her journey below.
1. What first drew you to Activate Mental Health, and what made you stay?
I joined AMH after becoming quite depressed after losing both my parents three months apart. Rahul was a great listener & everyone I met in the group were very friendly & accepting. I’ve attended mostly walking events and the Creativity Jam at Dome Belmont. I’ve enjoyed the breakfast and walk format at the Hyde Park Hotel too.
2. How has being part of AMH impacted your mental well-being or sense of community?
I always leave an event feeling happier. It’s a great group to chat to about all types of things. I’ve met some amazing people, a couple of them have become close friends & we catch up outside of the group.
3. What’s one moment or event at AMH that really stuck with you?
In April 2022, I went to Tomato Lake for a walk & some Easter eggs with Rahul & a lovely group of people. I really loved this park & was amazed how beautiful it was & how close it was to my childhood home, but somewhere I’d never been. I go there often now as it’s still close to me and a safe place to walk.
4. What do you enjoy most about the AMH vibe or the kinds of people it attracts?
I love the fact that it is such an inclusive group. There is a great mix of male, female and non-binary, young & older, and from all walks of life. Everyone is accepted. It’s the friendliest Meetup group I’ve attended. I love the variety of activities that are available.
5. If someone was thinking about joining but felt unsure, what would you say to them?
I would tell them to give it a try as they’ve got nothing to lose. It’s an accepting group that is fun, safe and worth joining.
